Is this school right for my child?
We understand that making the right choice of school for your child with SEND can be complex for many reasons. You may have worries and concerns that could include:
- Can the school genuinely meet my child’s emotional and sensory needs? What about their health needs? And their academic needs?
- How will my child make friends here? Is there a suitable peer group?
- Will my child be safe and feel safe?
- How will my child manage the journey to and from school?
- Would my child enjoy coming here?
These are all the right questions to be asking - yet can be hard to answer from website information alone.
A key factor in admission to a specialist school, is academic need, as articulated in the cognition and learning section in your child's EHCP. You may be considering whether specialist provision would meet your child's needs, and if so, which type of provision. See the Local Offer pages for more information about the range of specialist schools in Essex.
SLD provisions, including The Wolsey Park School, are usually designed to meet the needs of learners who:
- Have a very limited understanding of concepts
- Require support for communication, self-care, play and/or social interaction
- May have additional needs such as physical disabilities or sensory impairments
- Require highly individualised teaching, and a curriculum which focuses on life skills and communication rather than academic subjects,
PMLD provisions, including The Wolsey Park School, are designed for learners with the range of very high-level needs that is often categorised as profound and multiple learning difficulties. These learners are likely to be pre-intentional communicators, have difficulty learning through imitation, and often be completely reliant on others to meet their physical and medical needs.
Other factors, including distance from home, curriculum offer, peer groups, and methods of communication will all impact on the suitability of a particular provision.
If you think Wolsey Park may be the right school for your child, please speak to your SEND Operations Team in the first instance.
